Things I love so far this week- Christmas edition

It’s late on a Sunday night and my internal clock is off in a might-be-in-London-but-am-in-SF sort of way. Ack. The familia just left tonight and we had some classic moments that made this Christmas unforgettable:

1. Watching crabbers haul in dungeness crabs at Crissy Field.
2. Catching glimpses of the seal that ate the bait of the crabbers if they waited too long.
3. A seagull stealing a whole piece of fried fish from my Mom at Fisherman’s Wharf!
4. Baked hot chocolate. Yum.
5. Darkened rooms of jellyfish at the Monterey Aquarium.
6. Playing badminton with M. on the beach Christmas Day and getting a rally of 9 hits!
7. An 8 hour drive to San Simeon to watch “Building the Dream” The Hearst Castle movie (since the tours were sold out).
8. Playing Mexican Train with la familia and LL en la casa!
9. Seeing the Kite Runner and bawling. Did I say bawling?
10. Mom’s interpretation of Blas de Otero’s poem “Loyalty”.
11. Getting to level 6 on Ms. Pac-Man
12. Playing pool with M. and somehow hitting all of his balls in, but not hitting in my own.
13. Baking with Tia B.

A shift of sorts

2008 is winking at me in a mischevous man-at-the-bar-who’s-not-taking-himself-too-seriously sort of way. I am on the verge of ending my year-long fast of animal-given protein. As I mull what will be in 2008 (going dairy-free, purifying), I reflect in brief on classic moments of a self-imposed vegetarianism:
– Hello beans and legumes! Hey, we were just getting acquainted and who’s to say it ends here?
– I watched crabbers pulling in a very angry and headstrong dungeness at Crissy Field last week feeling equal parts bad that his demise was coming this way and then remembering the buttery sweetness reminiscent of the dungeness.
– My cleanse enabled me to address head-on a love affair with sugar in a whole new way- dancing anyone?
– Give me an hour at the San Rafael Farmer’s Market and I will give you a dish of seasonal yum.

Benevolent Creator

I love a good quiz, especially one that has pretty color combinations. The personality DNA quiz is 11 pages long albeit short pages, but is a lot of fun. Tell me if you think my results match me. Share yours with me after you do the quiz… Let the games begin.

When cleansing during the holiday season

Last Tuesday I began a 3-week cleanse. What does that mean, you might ask, to which I would respond I can’t eat any:
– dairy
– sugar
– bread
– fruit (except green Granny Smith apples)
– vinegar
– alcohol

The glitch might appear to be the fact that I had yet to celebrate my birthday or Christmas coming round the corner. Being vegetarian amps up the challenge of this cleanse quite a bit. Day one was a stretch- my energy was off in the afternoon and lucidity felt like it was at arm’s length but always moving away. Day two proceeded to be infinitely better because of reframing the cleanse as being “vegan for 3 weeks”. All of a sudden I could figure out how to feed myself. So far it’s been leap years better. The key is prepared food and variety. So below is something yummy and satisfying I made up tonight as an after-dinner treat. Enjoy.

GREEN APPLE CRISP
- 1 Green apple, diced
- 1 tbsp. olive oil
- 1/2 cup oats
- 1 tbsp. walnuts
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1 1/2 tbsp. ginger
- 1 packet of stevia
- 1/2 lime, squeezed

1. Preheat oven to 350.
2. Pour the green apple into a small oven-safe platter
3. Drizzle olive oil into a saucepan and once heated add the oats, walnuts, cinnamon, ginger, stevia, lime juice. Toast for a few minutes over medium flame until the oats are golden brown in color.
4. Then pour the oat mixture over the apples and stick in the oven for 15-20 minutes or until the apples are soft and the oat mixture is browned.
5. Let cool for a few minutes and enjoy.

The present of history- part 1

is that it often is a precursor to the past. As a wise man once said, “There is nothing new under the sun” and perhaps music is the best instrument of that. I find often new interpretations but even more often familiar riffs embedded into “new” songs. And yet my poet du jour and I talked for hours about how the past informs the present and collides with the future. We think we’re so different… but really as I get older (I know 31 years is not so old) I see how connected we all are. Look at our bodies and how they function for instance.

The human body has to be the most fascinating created piece of art in history. We are art in motion as it were, where the symbiosis of our parts hurls us into a society full of other us’s. I spent the first part of tonight with a naturopath. He is a healer and uses alternative medicine, acupuncture and chiropractic in tandem to treat the body as a whole instead of its parts. As he was conducting muscle tests to gauge the level of health of my organs, he made a few passing remarks of “hmm” or “interesting”. Then at one point when he pulled back, like the conductor pulling up a chair to converse with the music he had been conducting, he asked me a simple, short question: “How was your childhood?”

He then proceeded to explain that my body’s primary concern right now is my childhood and its rectification. In fact, my main allergy it turns out is linked to a particularly traumatic time in my childhood. And in order for that allergy to disappear, that time must be forgiven and passed over once and for all, the ghost of Christmas past laid to rest. I learned tonight that the liver is the organ that bears our griefs and sadnesses. So it wasn’t altogether shocking that the supplements he recommended will balance out my liver. Tomorrow I begin a cleanse for three weeks and that was my initial intent of the visit. Oh yes, no sugar or bread or vinegar or wine on my birthday or Christmas. But I’m seeing this as my gift to myself- a chance to cleanse and purify in preparation for 2008.

Over a quick bite at a neighborhood Chinese restaurant tonight, I opened up my fortune cookie and read as a cocked half-smile slid across my face: “Good health will be yours for a long time.”
